01. History

History of Albert Einstein Cancer Center

Albert Einstein Cancer Center (AECC) has its home at Yeshiva University’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine, which is located in the Morris Park neighborhood of the Bronx, a borough of New York City. Albert Einstein was one of the first cancer centers on a medical school campus to be recognized by the National Cancer Institute at its founding in the early 1970s. Its researchers and faculty fall into eight research categories and are experts in a wide range of cancer specialties. The center and the college of medicine have a long history, rich with medical breakthroughs. The Albert Einstein College of Medicine was the first medical school to establish a Department of Genetics in 1964, and the following year the school opened one of the first general clinical research centers in the United States. In 1976, researchers at Einstein were the first to make advances with Taxol, one of the most important cancer-treatment drugs in history.

Mesothelioma Care at Albert Einstein Cancer Center

The Montefiore-Einstein Center for Cancer Care, a partner of the Albert Einstein Cancer Center in the Bronx, treats lung cancer and chest diseases with a team of experts, including those specialized in treating mesothelioma. They work to find innovative methods for treating cancer with comprehensive, individualized care. The two centers have a close partnership in research and patient care.

Their multidisciplinary approach includes surgeons, radiation and medical oncologists to provide care to patients who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma. The experts at the center are trained in early detection and treatment of mesothelioma cancer, whether the individual case requires surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, experimental treatment through a clinical trial or a combination of methods.

Albert Einstein Cancer Center conducts research as a National Cancer Institute-accredited Cancer Center. The center’s experts study cytogenetics, targeted therapies and other drug treatments to bring to clinical trials. With their close partnership, this groundbreaking research conducted at this center is easily and regularly transferred to the Montefiore-Einstein Center to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment for mesothelioma and all cancers. Patients also have access to patient advocates, who will help connect them with other resources and ensure benefits from insurance providers are properly handled and received.
