04. Asbestos Use in Brooklyn
Asbestos Use in Brooklyn, New York
Because of its durability and resistance to heat, asbestos was widely used in many buildings and industries throughout New York state until the 1980s. Workers in power plants, shipyards, prisons, schools, hospitals and other commercial structures throughout Brooklyn were exposed to the harmful mineral.
Asbestos is still found in older buildings, posing modern-day hazards. In 2004, for example, Public School 219 in East Flatbush was closed after asbestos was released into the air during renovations of the gym floor. Asbestos-lined coverings were also discovered in air vents in a Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) bus depot in Brooklyn in 2019.
While many companies and worksites used asbestos, one of the biggest sites of exposure in Kings County was the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Links Between Brooklyn Navy Yard and Mesothelioma
Millions of Americans were exposed to asbestos while working in shipyards in World War II, including employees at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. One of six original U.S. government shipyards, Brooklyn Navy Yard opened in 1801 and was an active military site until 1966. The shipbuilding facility employed about 70,000 workers during World War II and launched warships such as the USS Maine, USS Arizona and USS Missouri. After the shipyard closed, it was redeveloped as a Brooklyn industrial park.
Asbestos was used widely throughout the shipyard, particularly as insulation for hot water and steam pipes in warships. However, it wasn’t only ship workers who were exposed. According to research from the University of Columbia, workers at the Brooklyn Navy Yard also spent time in the boiler shop and central power plant, where asbestos was used as insulation in boiler systems. Foundrymen and welders wore protective gear made with asbestos, such as gloves, leggings and aprons.
The impact of this constant exposure to asbestos came to light in the 1970s when Dr. Irving Selikoff, a doctor at Mount Sinai Hospital, made the connection between asbestos and lung cancer. He had started seeing large numbers of patients who worked in the Brooklyn shipyard and high rates of lung carcinoma.
Dr. Selikoff also noted the impact of indirect exposure. One patient with significant levels of asbestos in his lungs who died of mesothelioma wasn’t a shipyard worker. He was born two blocks away from the Brooklyn Navy Yard as shipbuilding began to peak during World War II.
Many asbestos companies sold products used at the shipyard, including Johns-Manville, Owens-Illinois, Inc., Inc. and Keene Corporation. These companies continue to be named in asbestos lawsuits.
