Asbestos at Orlando Air Force Base

Asbestos was used by the United States Air Force in a variety of structures and machinery. Air Force bases around the country used asbestos, including in Orlando, Florida. Air Force members were also exposed to asbestos during plane maintenance and repair.

Asbestos was popular in part for its durability and ability to withstand high heat. It was used as a fireproofing material in aircraft brakes and machinery. A variety of aircraft equipment was also commonly insulated with asbestos.

During World War II (WWII), the Orlando Air Force Base served various purposes. It was a technical training facility for the Air Training Command and Tactical Air Command. The base was also a headquarters installation for the Military Air Transport Service (later Military Airlift Command) and the Air Rescue Service.

In 1968, the installation was transferred to the U.S. Navy. It was then renamed Naval Training Center Orlando. It served as one of three Navy-enlisted recruit training centers. Various technical training schools, including the Navy Nuclear Power School for officers and enlisted personnel, were located here.

The Orlando Air Force Base was eventually sold to the City of Orlando. This was due to the direction of the 1993 Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC 1993). Eventually, the City of Orlando sold it to private developers who demolished much of the base. The developers built residential and commercial properties. This area was renamed Baldwin Park.
