04. Asbestos Use in Stratford

Asbestos Use in Stratford, Connecticut

There are more than three-dozen organizations in Stratford with known asbestos use. In the city, asbestos has been identified in manufacturing plants, schools, mills, homes, factories and even a theater. It can be found in fire-resistant materials, insulation and other products. Stratford companies in industries such as dairy, chemical and metal manufacturing used asbestos materials. This widespread use of asbestos puts workers, residents and visitors at risk of exposure.

Stratford, Connecticut and Raymark Industries Asbestos Exposure

The city of Stratford, Connecticut, is located along the Long Island Sound in Fairfield County. Originally dependent on shipbuilding and oystering, the city eventually moved to manufacturing. One of those manufacturing companies was Raymark Industries, which mostly produced parts for the automotive industry. Throughout the years, the company was also known by other names. It went by the name “Raybestos” after its patented product in 1916 and “Raybestos-Manhattan Co.” after merging with Manhattan Rubber Co. in 1929.

The manufacturer produced brakes, clutches and gaskets in Stratford that contained asbestos from 1919 to 1989. During this time, waste from the manufacturing was disposed of on the facilities’ land, commercial, recreational and municipal properties. This dumping of hazardous waste also occurred on at least 46 residential properties and in the nearby wetlands. The hazardous waste contained many contaminants, including asbestos.

Close to 150,000 residents in the city of Stratford, Connecticut, were potentially exposed to this toxic waste.

In the 1920s, Raymark produced more than 11 million feet of asbestos annually. Around this time, the dangers of asbestos were becoming recognized. In 1935, Raybestos President Sumner Simpson wrote a letter to another manufacturing company. He wrote, “Our interests are best served by having asbestosis receive the minimum publicity.” This letter would later be used in court cases against Raymark.

During World War II, the company produced 90% of brake liners for U.S. bombers. This could have exposed many veterans and civilians to asbestos.

In 1958, cases of mesothelioma were on the rise in the city of Stratford, Connecticut, and were higher than anywhere else in the state. However, Raymark continued to heavily use asbestos. Reports show the company imported 10 million pounds of raw asbestos into Stratford throughout 1968.

In 1971, after decades of asbestos use, the first asbestos-related lawsuit was filed against the company.

In 1989, the company filed for bankruptcy due to an onslaught of asbestos litigation. Raymark then shut down its Stratford location.
